Having a great smile requires knowledge of how to maintain excellent oral health and hygiene.
And for many people, it is important to keep the whiteness of their teeth on point in order to smile and laugh without any worries. We often choose to whiten their teeth professionally or to do so at home, with homemade remedies.
But what people don’t understand, is that they should first look at the cause: Why their teeth are stained? What types of stains do they have? Only this way they would know how to get rid of those quickly, effectively and easy, and for a long period of time.
Multiple types of stains exist, which, of course, are caused by various factors. Accordingly, the methods for whitening those spots are distinct for each type. Moreover, some types cannot be got rid of because they are deep in the enamel. Below you will find the 4 most common types of staining that people experience.
Let’s get started!
White spots
Those sports are not on the surface of the teeth and look extremely white. Many people think that this is the real color of their teeth and that they should whiten the tooth area around those spots. However, this is not true.
This teeth condition is characterized by diminished calcium concentration in specific areas of the tooth (lower concentration than usual). Specialists claim that this is a prerequisite for cavity formation; thus, you should check it regularly in your dentist`s office.
Unfortunately, the white spots cannot be “hidden” if you go under whitening treatment because they cannot be reversed with surface therapy. Instead, the only way to get rid of them is to cure the decalcification condition. As the main cause for it is chronic dehydration and reduced saliva production, the way to make your teeth with uniform shade is to stay hydrated and enrich your diet with fluoride and calcium.
Fluorosis
The contrary condition to the white spots is the fluorosis. It happens then too much fluoride is concentrated in the teeth.
Luckily the stains are not very visible, yet they are situated on the whole tooth area. Because the teeth are not externally stained, whitening procedures are not effective in this case. The efficient method to use is to decrease the intake of fluoride: either by drinking less mineral water, cut any supplementing, or lower the consumption of fluoride-rich foods.
“Tetracycline” teeth
For those who are not fans of antibiotics, “tetracycline” is a type of antibiotic frequently used for the treatment of infections and bacterial inflammations. The intake of this medicine causes the creation of yellowish horizontal stains on the teeth, only in the part near the gums.
Getting rid of such staining is extremely difficult as it takes from 2 to 6 months of consistent professional treatment. There is not only one way to whiten those stains, as the treatment for every person is strongly individual and is defined by a dentist specialist.
“Extrinsic” stains
This is a prevalent condition across people who are either smokers or consume chocolate, coffee, red wine, and other dark products on a regular basis. The stains are on the outside of the tooth enamel; thus, they can be quickly faded with various types of whitening treatments. In fact, this is the most common type of staining that people experience.
