In RawBeautySourse, we have emphasized multiple times on the importance of knowing the function of the cosmetic ingredients that we use. This way, we can protect ourselves from any harmful effects of irritating or inflaming elements in our cosmetic products.
Of course, we should first look at our skin type (by the way, you can identify it by clicking here). Then according to the type, identify which ingredients are suitable for dry, oily or dehydrated skin and use them accordingly!
However, there are some ingredients, which are suitable for every skin type: such ingredients are the Ceramides!
Let’s dive in!

What are ceramides?
Ceramides are literally lipid molecules. Yes, the same lipids that form the protective barrier of the skin in the epidermis!
According to Google Patents, the ceramides used in the cosmetic field are naturally derived from pork skin, cow brain, eggs, blood cells, or plants. And exactly because they are extracted from organic tissues (not prom chemically-created ingredients), they are very efficiently absorbed and non-irritating to the human skin. On the other hand, the origin of those natural ceramides makes them very tricky for storage because they are prone to bacterial contamination. That is why specialists recommend buying ceramide cosmetic products in packages other than the typical jars: for example, in a tube or pump.
How do ceramides work?
Usually, when we experience skin problems, our lipid barrier is damaged. Ceramides help the skin cells to link and stay together, by “introducing new lipids.” In fact, they play the role of those artificial lipids, which fill the space of missing or damaged lipids in the epidermis, reducing all kinds of skin damage.
In long-term use, this process stimulates the regeneration of new skin cells. This way, the ceramides stimulate and facilitate the skin’s natural self-replenishment, rejuvenation, and exfoliation. And as we all know, efficient natural skin exfoliation leads to healthier-looking, stronger, and suppler skin.
